Documentary–Film on art

TRAILER

The Film

The massacre of the innocents tells the story of an artwork inspired by another artist and looked upon by a third Artist. It is the subjective gaze of the filmmaker that is also representative of how the artist Detlef Gotzens sees this work.  A look at a new interpretation of a work of art over 400 years old that is still resonating today and the questions that it entails about our time.

The Artist

DETLEF GOTZENS

I worked for 18 months on and off on this painting because it was a struggle for me.

My intent was to make a work of art that could stand on it’s own and do Rubens justice.

My goal was to express my feelings about the world we live in using the medium that is mine thus creating that moment of contemplation and reflection.

It is the only power I have as an artist.

The filmmaker

Alain Boisvert

During the 2 years of shooting in his studio my goal has always been to capture the essence of Detlef’s work. Rubens shadow loom’s over Detlef’s painting as it was taking shape.

I slowly reveal his exploration and adaptation as he unveils his artwork that finaly becomes his own.

I would like to thank le Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for it’s support.
